4 Tips to Enjoy Your Vacation Without Getting Behind at Work

It can be challenging to maintain business as usual at the office when you’re preparing for an upcoming vacation. Whether you own a business, manage a team, have a demanding sales position, or have a never-ending list of to-do’s, it can be difficult to schedule a time for yourself. To help make it easier, we’re sharing some of the best tips to help you schedule a much-needed break from work while creating a seamless workflow at the office while you're off lying on the beach, heading on a road trip adventure, or enjoying some peaceful time at home without any disruptions from the office.

1. Plan Ahead

Schedule time before your trip to communicate with your team and customers, letting them know when you’ll be out of the office. This is the perfect time to identify who will be helping manage your responsibilities while you’re gone and gives them a chance to ask you any questions before you leave. Make sure to take some time to write out all of your processes, so it’s easier for everyone to stay on the same page and make sure that no responsibilities fall through the cracks.

2. Rely On Your Team's Support

It helps to have co-workers or employees that you can trust to get the job done when you’re out of the office. Once expectations have been established about what needs to be done in your absence, your team should be able to take care of the rest so you can take a break from work and enjoy a well-deserved break. A simple tip to make sure that your entire team knows what needs to be done in your absence is to send a quick email update before you leave on your vacation—giving a brief reminder of what needs to be done while you’re gone.

3. Work Ahead

Although it can be exhausting piling on to your current workload, if you get ahead of urgent tasks before your trip, you’ll be able to relax while you’re away. Take the time to prioritize what can’t wait to be finished until you get back and the rest of your tasks put on hold. This is especially important when you have a fast-approaching deadline and assignments that need to be completed on time.

4. Schedule in Designated Check-In Times

For the most part, you should focus on enjoying your vacation. However, if you have a job that you can’t completely check out for a week, schedule a designated time each day that you’re gone to check your email to make sure that the person covering for you doesn’t need anything, and any urgent messages are forwarded along so they can be addressed quickly.

It’s important to schedule in time to take a break from work to reduce stress, and come back rejuvenated and ready to take on your upcoming projects and deadlines. By implementing these simple tips, you’ll avoid the headache of having to cut your vacation short or work throughout because a project deadline hit right in the middle of your travels, and there was no one to cover for you.
